i've been on luvox (300 mg) for a year or so, and while it's helped, my psychiatrist suggested we give something else a try just to see if it works better. so i'm switching to effexor (venlafaxine), which is an SNRI rather than an SSRI.

just wondering if any of you guys had any experiences with effexor (good or bad) that you could share with me. i was originally on zoloft and am now tapering off luvox in order to switch over to the effexor, so experiences as compared to those two drugs in particular would be much appreciated. side effects, effectiveness against OCD, blah blah blah, any info would be great.

thanks!

Effexor was ok-ish for me, not much different from Luvox when it comes to OCD. Except for one crucial difference: coming off from Effexor can be absolute hell. I wouldn't switch to it lightly, because coming off isn't so easily done. Effexor also has a very short half-life, so if you are late on a dose, expect withdrawals in a few hours. Again, don't switch if your current med is working, I say, in any case that isn't a very good strategy.

Effexor didn't really do anything for me. The only drug I ever had success with was a combination both Luvox and anafranil. I'm surprised he didn't just add anafranil to the mix.

I never took Effexor but I did take Lexapro. According to what I've read, coming off of Effexor is similar to Lexapro, which was absolutely horrid. I felt like I was addicted to the stuff and I kept getting dizzy spells and brain shivers for weeks after I stopped taking it. So...just a word of caution about that.
